Besides chat for quick questions, Claude used to offer separate places: "Cowork" for handing over bigger pieces of work, and "Claude Design" for making visuals. When you're just starting out, it's easy to get stuck on "where am I supposed to ask for this?"
On top of that, work you started in one place didn't carry over to another. You often ended up explaining what you had discussed in chat all over again somewhere else.
With a change Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026, this "choosing a place" is no longer necessary. Let's look at what changed, why it helps people starting from zero, and how to make your first request.

What changed: chat and Cowork are now one Claude
According to Anthropic's announcement, chat and Cowork, which used to be separate, have merged into one Claude. A question you want answered right away and a report with a deadline can both be requested from the same conversation. It is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first over several weeks, with Team and Free plans expected to follow soon.
What you make now lives in one place too. Claude Docs, for writing documents together, and Claude Slides, for making presentation slides, are new, and Claude Design now works inside conversations. All three are in beta (trial release) on paid plans, and you can still use Claude Design on its own as before.
The announcement explains that the most frustrating part for users was deciding where a task belonged. Claude figures out what a task needs, so you don't have to pick a place.
Why it helps people starting from zero
When you're starting from zero, sorting out "is this a writing job or a design job?" is hard in itself. Not having to do that sorting is the biggest change.
Another plus is that things made in the same conversation stay consistent. The announcement describes asking for a report and slides in one conversation, with the slides already matching the report when they're done. The "explaining it all over again" step never happens in the first place.
What you make sits at one shareable link that you can open on your phone. You can select a part you want to change and move it yourself, or ask Claude to "change this like so." You can go back and forth from discussion to finishing touches inside one conversation.
Your first request: ask for the finished form in the same conversation
Now that you don't pick a place, it's a good idea to also say what form you want to receive at the end. If you add whether you want text, slides, or a visual design, Claude can choose the right way to make it.
Here's what an actual request looks like.
$ claude > Write an announcement for next month's event. > Then make 5 slides explaining the same content.
According to the announcement, by default Claude checks with you before taking action, and if something is unclear along the way, it asks. Claude will ask about what it doesn't know, so you can start without preparing perfect instructions.
Summary
Chat and Cowork are now one, and you can ask for text, slides, and designs from the same conversation. The time spent wondering where to ask and the effort of re-explaining things somewhere else are gone, so you can focus on what you want to make.
Rather than learning which tool to use when, say what you want and in what form you want to receive it. This way of thinking keeps working even as features are added or renamed.
